Piano Lesson Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a piano to start music lessons?

Yes, students should have access to a piano or keyboard at home in order to practice between lessons. If you do not yet have an instrument, we can walk you through options like purchasing or using a rent-to-own program.

What's the difference between an acoustic piano and keyboard for learning how to play?

Both acoustic pianos and keyboards are fine for learning. Just make sure that the keys are touch sensitive and weighted.

What age can a child start learning how to play the piano?

Many children are ready to begin piano lessons when they are able to read and count, which is often around age 7.

What else do I need to play the piano?

A sustain pedal is required, as it is commonly used in piano music and will become an important part of learning proper technique.
