Violin Testimonials

I was interested in taking violin lessons after retiring from work. A friend told me about Harper’s music and I was referred to Wyatt. Wyatt is quite knowledgeable about music . He is very patient and teaches a variety of music styles while also giving history and background of the music. I have taken lessons for about 2 years and feel so comfortable with my skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the violin hard to learn?

How long does it take to learn how to play the violin?

Like any instrument, learning how to play the violin can be challenging at first, but it’s not harder to master than other instruments. With consistent practice and proper instruction, students can build skill and confidence over time.

While every student progresses at their own pace, most begin to notice meaningful improvement after about 3 months of consistent practice and instruction. Developing a strong foundation takes time, but with regular effect, students can expect steady growth.

What age is best to start learning the violin?

Age 7 and beyond is generally a great time to begin learning the violin. At this age, most students have the focus and coordination needed to build a strong foundation. That said, it’s never too late to start- older beginners can also make excellent progress with the right approach.

Do I need to learn how to read music first?

No, reading music and learning how to play the violin are not mutually exclusive. You will learn how to read music alongside learning to play, so the two skills develop together.

Should I rent or buy a violin?

It depends on the student’s age and experience level. For children, renting is often the best option since they may outgrow their instrument. For adult students, purchasing a violin can be a worthwhile investment, especially if they plan to continue long-term.

How do I choose the right violin size?

A local store can assist with sizing or, we’re happy to help you determine the right violin size during your initial consultation.

What else do I need besides a violin?

In addition to the violin and bow, you’ll need a few essential accessories: rosin (for the bow hair) and a tuner (to keep your instrument in tune).

How often should I practice the violin?

Practicing 15-30 minutes a day is a great starting point. Consistency is key, so try to aim to practice every day with no more than one day off per week (in addition to your lesson day) to help build steady progress. Shorter, focused lessons are more effective than occasional longer ones.
